Lynn Haven Commission Meeting Raises Concerns Over Police Chief's Conduct

LYNN HAVEN, FL - The City of Lynn Haven Commission meeting held on February 27, 2024, proved to be a tumultuous gathering as citizens voiced their concerns about Chief Ramie's recent brush with the Florida Highway Patrol, leading to a call for his resignation. The community's trust in law enforcement has been shaken by revelations of Chief Ramie's reckless behavior, further exacerbated by the lack of transparency surrounding these incidents.
The chief's actions have not only dishonored the badge but also violated the employee handbook policy on multiple occasions warranting a dismissal. This is all in reaction to his hit-and-run incident that occurred in Ms. Newby's parking lot in December 2023 during the early morning hours.
Citizens expressed disappointment in learning about Chief Ramie's behavior through social media this month instead of from the City Commission in January, emphasizing the erosion of public trust.
One citizen, expressing frustration, called for Chief Ramie's resignation, arguing that the chief should have taken leave to address his apparent drinking problem. The community's concern extended beyond the chief's actions, as citizens highlighted the broader impact on the local and panhandle law enforcement's morale and standard of excellence.
During the meeting, a member of the public vented frustration by giving Mayor Nelson the finger, resulting in his removal from the premises. This incident further highlighted the charged atmosphere surrounding the meeting and the intense emotions surrounding the issue at hand.
One of the major concerns raised was Chief Ramie's failure to report both the hit-and-run incident and a health issue that could potentially impact his duties. The citizens recommended a series of actions, including making the police chief an elected position, addressing the employee directly, and ensuring better communication with the public.
Criticism also extended to City Manager Vickie Gainer, who holds the authority to hire and fire the police chief. Citizens accused Gainer of failing to inform the Commission about the potential charges against Chief Ramie in a timely manner, with one suggesting a vote of no confidence in Chief Ramie in the next agenda.
In response to the mounting concerns, Mayor Nelson emphasized that the city is not directly involved in the ongoing investigation. He highlighted that the city manager, in accordance with the 14th amendment, would take appropriate actions based on the findings, respecting the rights to due process.
The dark cloud hanging over Lynn Haven serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in local governance. As the community grapples with these revelations, the call for change and a renewed commitment to upholding the integrity of law enforcement has never been more pressing. The Commission faces the challenging task of rebuilding public trust and ensuring that the actions of a few do not tarnish the reputation of the entire force.
