Hearing from the Public
A father spoke about his 6th grade son who was jumped by four 8th grade boys in the bathroom at Tyndall Academy earlier this month. He said the teacher that broke up the incident didn’t report it to the Principal. The parents were not alerted until the boy asked to go to the nurse, who then notified the Principal. The parent is still trying to meet with the Superintendent regarding the incident.
A mother spoke about her daughter and 4 other children who have been trying to get on the Arnold HS cross-country team since Aug 14th. She explained the process and how it’s broken and how the families are led to dead-ends. She has been trying to see the Superintendent about the issue and brought handouts for the School Board members and Superintendent about the issue.
Words from the Superintendent
He did not comment on the two parents who spoke. Superintendent McQueen gave an update on the Florida DOE initiative to reduce state regulations where it makes sense. (We had the opportunity to provide inputs to this last month.). The said he is going to all of the middle and high schools last week and this week with the Sheriff and Dept of Health to set the bar for school conduct and behavior. Oct 9th schools will be closed for Columbus Day. (Chairman Moss also referred to it as Indigenous Peoples Day.)
District - Epi- pen policy
Lyndsey Jackson, BDS nurse, spoke about a new policy 7.307 regarding the school purchasing Epi-pens for the students. It will be part of the basic first aid offered to children if their parents give permission. The policy is out for public review for 30 days and will be voted on by the board the end of November.
