Resolutions, A Good Idea

by Cheryl Cronbaugh

New Year’s resolutions aren’t something new. History indicates the Babylonians started doing New Year’s resolutions 4000 years ago that aligned with getting a new king or proclaiming loyalty to a new king. They would promise to pay off debts or promise to return borrowed goods.

Since I was a kid, just a few years ago (maybe 60 or so), we would always talk about these resolutions. Teachers and parents would encourage them to get better behavior. Both genders would talk about losing weight, exercising more, saving more, budgeting better, being kinder, reading through the Bible or being more philanthropic.

We all go through a phase of not wanting to do any resolutions because we know we often fail. The truth is, any milestone can help you set new goals and seek to be a better person.

When January 31st rolls around and you find you have already lost traction on your resolutions, consider this: the next day is the first day of a new month and you can start all over again. In fact, any day can promise to be a fresh start. Maybe Tuesday is your day!

A bad golf game, a D or F on a test, an argument lost, you yelled at the kids, you didn’t make it to the gym - all excuses to give up. Excuses, not reasons. They say it can take 28 days to make something a habit - good news February has 29!

Remember: Persevere. Never give up!
