Opinion: If the TDC Will Not Act Disband Them

by Rex Reid

At the last County Commission meeting, they voted to approve an East Pass Feasibility Study for $183,750 and the McKenzie Boat Ramp Project for $592,295. Both of these projects should be funded by the bed tax/TDC.

The Florida statute is clear, despite what anyone may tell you. If a waterway has public access, those tax dollars can fund its cleanup and maintenance.

After the property tax amendment is passed, the county will be looking for alternative revenue sources, and this should be part of that solution. Frankly, it should have always been the case to help keep your millage rate low.

So please contact the commissioners and let your voice be heard. See below.

Subject: Use Bed Tax/TDC Dollars to Fund Waterway Maintenance

Commissioners, at your next meeting, please admonish the TDC to vote to fund the East Pass Feasibility Study and the McKenzie Boat Ramp Project.

The crafters of the statute governing how the bed tax dollars can be spent. Specifically stated that they can be used to clean up and maintain any waterway with public access.

If or more likely when the property tax relief amendment passes. We are going to be looking for alternative sources of funding, and bed tax dollars have to be a part of that solution.

If the TDC does not comply with your request. Then you should vote to disband it and take direct control over how the dollars are spent.

I don’t believe it would be a stretch to say, at a minimum, seventy percent of Bay voters would support you doing so.
