BAY COUNTY, FL – Bay County Sheriff, Tommy Ford, issued a Scam Alert today after multiple complaints were received about another scam in Bay County.

Scammers appear to be accessing arrest data publicly available online and then calling family members of those incarcerated. The scammer identifies themselves as law enforcement and manipulates the emotions of the family members of inmates, telling them that if they will use Cash App to send money to the law enforcement agency, their loved one will be placed on a GPS House Arrest Ankle Monitor Program, therefore getting out of the jail and going home with the monitor.

The family member agrees, sending money digitally through Cash App before realizing they have been scammed.

The truth is inmates are placed on a GPS House Arrest Ankle Monitoring Program only once their court date has happened and their case resolved. Not all inmates are placed on this program. If they are, it is a free program, with no cost to the family of the inmate.

No law enforcement agency will require payment for a home monitoring program and certainly will never require payment through Cash App.
