Silver Drivers - Golden Roads: AARP’s Smart Driver Course Keeps Boomers Cruising Safely

BAY COUNTY, FL – One of the most significant demographic factors affecting our nation's future is the aging of our population. The number of people aged 50 and older has grown significantly in the past decade; this segment will continue to increase more rapidly than other age groups in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by the year 2030, one in four drivers will be 65 or older which will mean there will be more than 30 million older drivers on our roads.
Traffic statistics indicate that older adults are overall safe drivers with good driving records. However, medical conditions, certain medications and age-related changes in physical and mental function can increase the risk of crashes and injury among older drivers. It is critically important that older drivers make safety a personal priority. AARP Driver safety is committed to helping Americans 50 and older sustain mobility as they age.
AARP-trained volunteers instruct the AARP Smart Driver Classroom course which enables drivers to refresh their driving skills and understand how to adjust to age-related challenges.
The course is usually presented to a group of 15 to 25 participants in a classroom format. Material fees are $25 for the general public aged 55+ and are only $20 for AARP members with a current membership card. Those younger than 55 years of age can attend the all-day seminar at no cost with a church member. Call Sue 850-871-4020 or text 850-769-7522 to sign up with your name and phone number.
The St. Andrew United Methodist Church and the Washington County Council on Aging are partners in the effort to make our communities safer. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has been partnering with the AARP Driver Safety program in its various incarnations for over 35 years.
