Florida Enacts Sound Money Act to Protect Against Inflation

TALLAHASSEE, FL - On May 28, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Sound Money Act (Florida House Bill 999), passed during the 2025 session, establishing gold and silver coins as legal tender for settling debts in Florida. The legislation eliminates taxes on these transactions. At the signing, DeSantis highlighted the law’s purpose: “This is our ability to give you the financial freedom to protect yourself against the declining value of the dollar.” 

The act aligns with the U.S. Constitution, aiming to shield Floridians from centralized currency control and external financial pressures, reinforcing economic autonomy. Representative Bankson noted, “The purpose of this bill is to define and enact the constitutional right to declare gold and silver as legal tender, eliminate the tax burden, and make it a functional means of transaction between willing parties.”

The law defines “gold coin” as a precious metal (atomic number 79) in solid form—such as rounds, bars, ingots, or bullion coins—with at least 99.5% purity, stamped with weight and purity, excluding jewelry, utility items like picture frames, or collectables. “Silver coin” is similarly defined as a precious metal (atomic number 47) in solid form—rounds, bars, ingots, or bullion coins—with at least 99.9% purity, stamped with weight and purity, also excluding jewelry, utility items, or collectables. This legislation marks a significant step toward economic freedom in Florida.
