Panama Country Club To Host Ladies Invitational

by Cheryl Cronbaugh

LYNN HAVEN, FL – Fifteen years… it has been that long since Panama Country Club hosted a ladies’ golf tournament, and it hasn’t been on their mind at all for the last 4 years since the hurricane.

Many have their own stories about what has changed since the hurricane and the Country Club is no different.

Big, beautiful windows in the Clubhouse facing the bay were blown all the way into the kitchen rendering it useless for a couple years. But the hardest thing for the members continues to be the loss of trees and habitat for the black fox squirrels. A Donald Ross designed course, nearly 4000 trees were lost changing the entire look of the once beautifully shaded course.

For a while there were piles of limbs and trunks. The broken sprinkler systems destroyed by the uprooted trees left the irrigation of the course undone. The restrooms became port-a-pots. But times are changing! Sprinkler system parts came from the closed Hombre Golf Course. Restrooms were rebuilt with another set to come, and landscaping is taking a priority. The course is reimaging the overall look as a cross between a parkland course and a links course taking its inspiration from TPC Sawgrass. The beautiful event center is available to rent as it over looks North Bay and the Grille Room offers fabulous food by the chef, Douglas Boatwright.

But it is time, time to get back into being the welcoming course that hosts ladies’ tournaments, along with the traditional men’s tournaments. On November 3rd, Panama Country Club and WAGA, the Women’s Auxiliary Golf Association, are hosting the 2023 PCC Ladies Golf Invitational. This event is open to the public and will feature teams of 2 women, in a flighted format of 6 holes of best ball, 6 holes of select shot and 6 holes of modified alternate shot. Women will go home with a towel, goody bag, full stomach with both breakfast and lunch provided and hopefully a large prize from their winnings.
